Interview, The Herald (UK) Posted at 6:26 AM (PST) on Friday, November 14, 2003 'Aids is not a fashionable cause any more' By Mark Smith The Herald For a long time - almost 10 years, in fact - Gillian Anderson searched for a truth we were told was out there. As Dana Scully in the paranoid fantasy series The X-Files, she looked for it among plagues of grasshoppers, shapeshifting aliens, and cigarette-smoking men. She has been looking for truth in real life, too, and she found it when she was least expecting to. Travelling through South Africa in May last year, Anderson visited Soweto, the township where Aids demands a daily sacrifice. There she met a boy who was living in unbelievable poverty. Every day, despite the appalling conditions, he would get up, go to school, and practise on the violin for hours and hours. There was a joy in his music, even if there wasn't anywhere else, and in subtle ways the boy began to change the landscape for himself and his famous visitor. Keep reading... Message from Gillian Posted at 4:34 AM (PST) on Thursday, November 13, 2003 Okay, so it is two thirty in the morning and I am wide awake because I have delayed jet lag and I am just bouncing off the walls. I have to apologize upfront that I am not, as usual, going to answer any of the questions although I do appreciate them immensely and it does not mean that I want you to stop asking them. I am just too much of a control freak. I am in the new house and loving it and loving London and there's a lot going on and I am very happy and did I say I was bouncing off the walls? I do not really have that much to say except that perhaps everyone who reads this could spare a few more minutes of their time and visit an AIDS related website to fill themselves in a bit more about what's going on with AIDS in Africa at the moment cause it's a real real problem right now and everyone and their cat should know the seriousness of the catastrophe. Oh my God, no pun intended. And that's about the extent of it from this corner of the world. Hope each and every one of you is feeling as invigorated and full of life as I am, and if you are not, you will again. Gillian. Available Now: The X-Files Complete Eighth Season Posted at 5:37 AM (PST) on Tuesday, November 4, 2003 Aliens on Earth: The 2000-2001 season of The X-Files, controversial even among the show's rabid fans, boasts the last on-screen meeting of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. "This was a very touching moment, one I'll never forget," says Kim Manners, who directed the season's last episode, Existence, in which Mulder (Duchovny) comes to see and hold the baby Scully (Anderson) had. "This was David and Gillian's last scene together and we shot it on the last day of the picture," Manners says in the commentary on the new DVD, The X-Files: The Complete Eighth Season, being released today. "As they come together to kiss," Manners says, "you'll see the camera pull out of the door and that was the last shot of David and Gillian together. We wrapped and David and Gillian stood in that room together alone and held each other for a good five minutes. They didn't talk. They didn't move. They just held each other, tears running down their faces." -- Toronto Sun: Showbiz For a detailed review of the DVD, click here. |
